Repair it, or replace it?

We work on the rule of three: if the repair costs less than a third of a new appliance, the machine is inside its expected life, and the fault is not structural — repair it. Here is how that rule plays out appliance by appliance.

Washing machine 8–12 years Drum bearing, PCB, pump or motor faults on machines under 8 years — repair usually costs a fifth of a new unit. The tub is rusted through, the chassis is corroded from salt water, or the model has no spares available.
Refrigerator 10–15 years Gas recharge, relay, thermostat, board or door gasket issues. Cooling coil repairs pay back quickly. The compressor is burnt and the cabinet is over 12 years old — replacement is more predictable.
Air conditioner 8–12 years Gas leak, PCB, fan motor, sensor or cleaning-related cooling loss. A single-stage unit older than 10 years being replaced with an inverter model — the power savings beat the repair.
Microwave / OTG 6–9 years Magnetron, diode, capacitor, HV transformer or touch panel failures. The cavity coating is peeling or burning near the waveguide — that is not a safe repair.
LED TV 7–10 years Backlight strips, power board, T-CON, speakers or socket issues on 32"–55" panels. The panel itself is cracked or has failed source boards on a 6+ year old set — panel cost exceeds the TV's value.
Clothes dryer 9–13 years Heating element, thermostat, belt, motor or control board faults. A vented dryer with a rusted drum or cracked heat exchanger.

Caring for appliances in Mumbai weather

Salt air, eight months of humidity, hard water in some buildings and power cuts in others. What kills appliances here is different from what kills them inland — so maintenance should be too.

Pre-monsoon (March–May)

  • Service the AC before the humidity hits — gas pressure and drain lines are checked when the unit is already working.
  • Clean condenser coils on the refrigerator; Mumbai heat makes an old coil run the compressor non-stop.
  • Descale the geyser and check the pressure-relief valve before the water gets softer with the rains.

Monsoon (June–September)

  • Washing machines trip on damp walls and sockets — keep the plug above splash level and test your earth wire.
  • LED TVs and microwaves fail from surface moisture; run them empty for 10 minutes after a power cut.
  • Dryer lint filters clog faster in humidity; clean after every load to stop overheating.

Post-monsoon (October–November)

  • Deep-clean the AC filters and blower wheel — monsoon dust is what causes the smell in October.
  • Check door gaskets on the fridge and washing machine; swollen seals leak after the wet months.
  • Clear the drain pump filter on front-loaders; sand and hair from the rains settle there.

Winter & summer prep (December–February)

  • Test the geyser and AC heating mode before you actually need it.
  • Refill water purifier cartridges after the monsoon sediment load has used them up.
  • Book repairs early — January is our busiest month and same-day slots go fast.

Signs you should call the same day

Burning smell or visible smoke, water leaking toward a socket, a fridge that has gone warm with food inside, an AC tripping the MCB, or a washing machine that will not stop filling. Isolate the appliance from power and call us — do not wait for a convenient slot.
